In you’re anything like me, then prayer is one of those disciplines that more times than I wish to admit, seems like an effort to begin each day. However, as those first prayers leave my lips, it is as if God immediately responds with “Yes, I hear you“, and then I am reminded why I pray each day…God loves to hear us and responds like a loving Father.
This year, I am committed to encouraging others to pray and read the Bible each day, not only because it is what Jesus exhorts us to do, but because I have come to know the Lord is such amazing, intimate and life giving ways through prayer and reading the Word…and I desire that for you.
In my experience if one starts each day in prayer and reading the Word with little or no structure, it doesn’t take long before everything else take precedence. It’s can be hard to keep praying and reading the Bible by ourselves every day for any length of time.
This 100 days of Prayer commitment is a way of bringing our challenges, concerns, issues of life, victories and joys, before the Lord. 100 isn’t some spiritual or magic number for prayer, the intent is to be consistent rather than length of time.
This isn’t my great idea, Jesus beat me to the punch more than 2,000 years ago when He taught that we should keep asking, keep knocking and keep seeking our heavenly Father…
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8 NIV)
Apparently, according to Jesus, this sustained, never let go attitude to prayer is not so much to persuade or twist God’s arm to give us what we want but rather, to transform us during this process.
My encouragement to you is to give yourself to this spiritual discipline of 100 days of prayer, and my guarantee is that you will reap the benefits and rewards of it…how do I know and how can I guarantee it?…because in the words of the Sunday School song I learnt so many years ago…”Because the Bible tells me so“.
